“In order to birth something, there are certain things we need to let go.”
The Story
On the heels of Rwandan genocide, those who fled the mass killings hope to find refuge in neighboring countries.
At only 13 year old, Sandrine found herself in danger as the Democratic Republic of Congo broke out into civil war in 1996.
The oldest of 6 children, Sandrine was left to care for half of her siblings when her mother, persecuted for being a Tuti, ran away in fear of her life.
Through much internal turmoil and struggle with personal identity, Sandrine hid her pain as she and her siblings begged for food on the street, waiting for her mother’s return.
Through deep-seated feelings of abandonment and rejection when they came to America as refugees in 1999, she blamed God for her circumstances, and did not deal with the pain of her past. Until one night in a bathroom at a dance club.
“All hell within me broke loose…I was told from the age of 13-16 that I was not worth loving, or living. The things that wee spoken to me became my reality…I came to America to meet Jesus.”
God’s Story
The children of Israel were taken from slavery, but Egypt was still in them. What beliefs still remain from your hard story that keeps you stuck?
Psalm 139 says that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. What does that mean to you, and what does this reveal about God’s care and concern for us?
Sandrine encourages us that we are not going to build our identity in this world. We are passing through. We are, first of all, God’s children.
It is for FREEDOM that Christ set us free, and we can use our hard stories to unlocking the stories of others. Our own story is the key.
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1 (NIV)
The Rest of Your Story
Sandrine’s hope is to see women flourishing in every season. We flourish by walking in the freedom from Christ Jesus. As the book of Revelation prophetically says, “…they overcame by the blood of the lamb and the word of their testimony.”
So what can you do to move forward?
- Get Healed
- Find Freedom
- Testify (tell your hard story)
